20 SOMETHING DOIN' SOMETHING #20SDS 20/20 vision
My mentor and me at #20SDS

A close friend of mine and my mentor has always told me to write down my goals and what it is that I want. Then she gave me a CD and as I was listening to it Dr. Myles Munroe began to define potential. He said, “Potential is what you can do but the people do not know it yet.” This is what inspired the interactive art piece from #20SDS. I wanted people to write down 2 things, first claim who they were or aspire to be and second tell what they were doing to do to get there, basically their VISION. I wanted people to write down and share their dreams, for when you have clear vision, it is called 20/20 vision acuity. That is how I came up with this 20/20 vision canvas, I wanted these 20 something’s at the event to participate in. It had no limits and people could put whatever they wanted. It was amazing to see some of the unique things people are doing and want out of life.

I was inspired by artist Candy Chang, “Renowned for interactive public installations that provoke civic engagement and emotional introspection, her work has examined issues from criminal justice and the future of vacant buildings to personal aspirations and anxieties.”

Not only did I want to provoke civil engagement but I wanted to provoke thoughts. I have noticed that people kill their dreams once they graduate college. When you are younger you proudly claim whatever it is that you want to be or do when you grow up (singer, photographer, producer, rapper) and then you graduate from college, get a job to pay student loans and forget to do what you set out to do all along.

I have a friend who doesn't consider herself a photographer but she takes insanely great pictures, she has an expensive camera, I love her work . . . so why not claim it.  Her response… because anybody and everybody can claim it, and  I understand that however, that is when I replied "buuuuut you actually do it!"  That is  what I mean by thoughts that would make people think “Hey this is who I am, and this is what I want, so this is what I am going to do to make it happen!”

The empty post-it like papers read “I am a 20 something____________ Doing ___________.” Even though I currently assist the merchandising department at a retail company that is not my title, that is not who I am, that does not show what all I am doing, what I can do, or my potential. My post it read. . .

“I am a 20 Something Creative Doin’ whatever it takes to end up on an island

I just want to be creative, if that means I’m sewing, drawing, helping others, planning events so be it. All I want to do is produce beautiful and great things but the bigger picture for me is to end up on an island, in the sun. I’m a beach girl. I say… “Why see the world when you’ve got the beach?”

After the event, it was hard getting this 60in canvas from the gallery to my, home but when I finally did, I enjoyed reading some of the things people wrote down! I hope you guys enjoy reading some of my favorite visions as much as I did and I cant wait until the next event so we can feel it up!
